The Water Drop Door
Project type
Art Works
Date
May 2024
Location
Ottawa
Join us as we glue up a beautiful walnut door, carve an interesting water drop pattern into the door and, create a handle, then hang the door using the Milcasa Magic 2 sliding door mounting system.
We glued up a door-sized panel of 1.5” walnut which we bought from our local supplier, KJP Hardwood. (https://kjpselecthardwoods.com/)
To make the door more interesting we digitized some actual water drop patterns, then used Vectric Aspire to design a pattern for the door. We overlapped some of the water drop ripples to create an interesting interference pattern. We cut out this pattern using our CNC router and Vectric’s 3D roughing and finishing toolpaths. We created a separate video showing how we did the CAD work for the water drop pattern. Check it out here: • Creating Water Drop Patterns in Vectric As...
The interference pattern has turned out to be our favorite part of the whole project - you can’t help but run your fingers over the subtle textures where the water ripples combine.
We also created a knob using the 4th axis on our CNC, and again using Vectric Aspire to design the droplet shape, and create the 4th axis toolpath.
Finally, we install the door on a closet in the master bedroom of a newly renovated home. We got some help with the installation from Colin at The Lake Partnership, who managed the renovation (https://www.tlpi.ca/).
